| New houses for those affected by JB project [ 29/11/2002 ] |
Residents of Bukit Chagar and Lumba Kuda flats affected by a multi-billion ringgit project can look forward to staying in new houses that will be built in Jalan Setanggi within the city area, courtesy of the state government.
Datuk Bandar Datuk Johari Suratman said the affected residents, numbering 2,600 families, would continue to enjoy renting low-cost houses at an affordable rate.
''The construction of the low-cost houses will be among the development which will take place on a 10ha site in Jalan Setanggi.
''While the houses are being constructed, the authorities will keep its pledge to either subsidise their rentals or find temporary houses,'' he said after chairing the monthly council meeting.
Residents of the two flats have been ordered to evacuate their rented units to make way for the construction of the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex and a bridge linking Johor Baru and Singapore that will replace the causeway.
The project is a mixed development plan between the state government and Resident Link Sdn Bhd that will include the construction of Johor Baru city council’s workshops and staff quarters.
Johari said in view of the plight of those affected, the government would change the composition of the current project to include low-cost housing.
