Johor completes 46,300 low cost homes [ 15/9/2002 ]
Johor has approved the building of over 265,000 units of low-cost housing over the past four years to meet the demand for such homes. State Housing and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Samat Aripin said 46,323 units had been completed while the rest were in the process of being built. ''Johor is one of the states which is very aggressive in pushing the low-cost housing programme for those in the lower income group. ''Besides imposing the 40% mandatory quota for such homes in schemes built by the private sector, the state also builds low-cost houses,'' he said at the launch of the Taman Pagoh Jaya low-cost houses yesterday. Samat said that since the demand for such homes were greater in big towns, especially Johor Baru, which had limited land area, developers had to build low-cost flats. However, he said there was still ample land in the districts, including Muar, and developers were able to build terrace houses. He said the state would take action against developers who failed to build low-cost houses within their schemes after getting approval to develop their land. ''There should not be any excuse for developers to delay the construction of such units and give priority to building medium-cost or luxury units instead,'' he said, adding that the committee had directed all local authorities to monitor the development of housing schemes in their areas. On low-cost homes here, Samat said there would be about 18,000 new units in the next few years as the state had identified sites near Bandar Maharani, Panchor and Sagil for the projects.
