| Sabah industrial park attracts 70 companies [ 16/10/2002 ] |
SABAH’s Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) has attracted investors from Australia, South Korea, Japan and the US to set up respective bases there.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Tham Nyip Shen said so far some 70 local and foreign companies are setting up business or have started operations at the industrial park.
KKIP, about 25km from Kota Kinabalu, was developed seven years ago despite strong protests from certain quarters who described it as a white elephant.
Tham said there is space for at least another 2,000 factories at the park but it would be unwise to venture into full-scale development without first addressing the human resource issue.
“KKIP is a long-term project, with full development expected only in another eight years,” he told reporters after visiting the Malaysian Agriculture and Research Institute (Mardi) complex at KKIP, yesterday.
“The KKIP project is similar to constructing a house. When under construction, a house looks messy with debris all over. KKIP is not completed yet, people who do not understand industrialisation will not understand the hard work required,” he said.
Tham said he has attended trade missions overseas, including with International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz, to woo investors to KKIP.
On activities implemented by Mardi, Tham said locals should make use of training and assistance provided by the institute to produce more food.
He said the state’s yearly food import bill stood at RM1.3 billion on average, and that locals must find ways and means to produce more rice, salt, sugar, milk and beef.
“Seafood products are also famous. We need to further develop the food sector by incorporating it with industrialisation. For instance, we need to find ways to ensure food remains fresh for export. This requires knowledge and industrialisation.”
He also said there was a need for entrepreneurs to look at creating value-added products from the abundant raw material available in Sabah.
During the visit, Sabah Mardi director Mohamed Yaakob briefed Tham on the institute’s role in supporting agriculture development.
